Brownies
7th December 2009 PDF Print E-mail

The Brownies finished up for the year on Monday 7th December with their Christmas party. Unfortunately, Santa could not be there in person, but he did leave a sack full of presents which were distributed to the girls.

As I (Brown Owl) am “retiring”, I was given a cute Brownie teddy bear and a beautiful brooch from the girls (not to mention a card which every girl had signed for me). I would like to say how much I have enjoyed both helping out at and running the pack over the last ten years or so. The girls have always made everything great fun and have been very enthusiastic about all the activities they have been asked to try. –craft evenings, making cards, Burns nights, visiting the library, the fire station and the Sherriff Court (we did bring all the girls back that evening), Christmas parties, Guy Fawkes nights, Olympics, games nights, Thinking days, Halloween, making posters, Brownie trips (to Edinburgh, Blair Drummond Safari Park, the Falkirk Wheel etc.)........... and a number of other things I can’t remember any more.

I will miss the Brownies in the future, but feel that the time has come to hand over to the new Brown Owl (Amanda) who will do an excellent job and bring a fresh perspective to the pack. (I would wish her good luck, but I know she will not need it).

Brownie Trip PDF Print E-mail

14th June 09

Trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park.

The Brownies met at the Brown Street Halls before getting on the bus to the park. As all the girls were there on time, we ended up arriving 20 minutes BEFORE the park opened (and we were the second bus – behind a Scout Group from Edinburgh).

We started off with a tour of the lion enclosure where the girls were lucky enough to see the lions just after they had been fed. After this, we went for a walk past the zebras, giraffes and rhino’s before running back to see the sea lion show (more because we heard thunder than us actually being late) which was very good. We then had a very pleasant lunch at picnic tables close to the bus, where we got through vast quantities of food - and as usual, none of the adults had to tell the girls to tidy up their rubbish- they just put it in the bin – what happens to young people when they get older?

After lunch we went to see the lemurs (if anyone tells you these are shy animals, they are lying as lemurs are very aware of how to look their best for the cameras!) before heading to the Birds of Prey show where we saw a real, live, feathery, barn owl!

From there, we headed round to the penguins and meerkats before allowing the girls to try out the maze. Luckily they all managed to find their way out before the bus had to leave and we had to begin our journey home.

Any girl who is between seven and ten years old can join The Brownies. (If you wish your daughter or ward to join first Camelon Brownies, can you e-mail her name, date of birth and a contact e-mail address, phone number and address to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The First Camelon Pack meets on Monday nights at Camelon Parish Church, Brown Street Halls (corner of Brown Street and Mansionhouse Road) from 6.30 pm till 7.45 pm.

Our usual meeting consists of each Brownie starting off in their sixes and singing their Six Song as they dance round our toadstool. They then play a few games before taking part in the evening's activity. We then finish the evening by singing "Brownie Bells" just before the girls are picked up.

During the year, the girls took part in a variety of different activities - craft work, games nights, badge nights book nights, etc as well as attending the Youth Dedication service at Camelon Parish Church and attending the Falkirk, Guide Association "Thinking Day " celebration when the girls think about other Brownies round the world and what their lives might be like. We also celebrated Christmas and Halloween with a party. At Halloween, the girls all dressed up in their party frocks and we held a masked ball (made the week before at Brownies) evening - they all looked lovely and it was great to see them all in their finery.

Currently our staff consists of Amanda Kirwin (Assistant Brownie Guider- better known as Tawny Owl), Claire Nagy (Assistant Brownie Guider- better known as Snow Owl) and Margaret Howie (Brownie Guider - better known as Brown Owl)

For our trip, we are intending to visit Blair Drummond safari Park and will let you know next time how we get on.
